Evaluate the health information found on the internet by examining the information provided on emotional health from one of the following websites:

Health Education Literature

Part of the role of being a health care professional is not only being a resource of health information, but communicating that information to those in need.  Health care professionals need to be able to find health information from credible sources.

Part I: Research Articles
All research articles follow a very similar pattern when it comes to content.  Review the Holman and White article from this week’s required resources.  To locate the article, click on the “Find Articles & More” link in the top navigation bar of the Ashford University Library.  Then, select the “Databases A-Z” link, followed by the letter “P” option.  Scroll down to the “PubMed Central” database, and enter the article title in the search bar.  You will want to review the full-text, PDF version of this article.

Step 1: Explain all sections of this article by describing the content and purpose of each section.

Step 2: Comprehensively analyze the content by addressing the following guiding questions which have been adapted from your text:

  • Were the objectives of the study clearly defined?
  • Was the research question stated?
  • Did the introduction provide reasoning for asking the research question?
  • Are the subjects well described?  Was the recruitment of the subjects clearly defined?
  • Was the design of the study described well?
  • Was the process of data collection clear?  Were the data collection instruments described well?
  • Was validity and reliability data reported for the data collection instruments?
  • Did the results address the research question?
  • Did the conclusions align with the results?
  • Did the authors suggest practical applications of the findings to a population that is similar to the subject population?

Part II: Evaluating the Accuracy of Non-Research-Based Information
When we obtain information from sources other than research articles, we still need to determine whether it is accurate and valid.  Explain the criteria used to evaluate non-research based information by addressing each of the following guiding questions:

  • Discuss each of the questions developed by Cottrell (1997) that are listed in your course text on page 297.
  • How does each of these questions enhance your search for credibility?
  • Are there similarities between these requirements and the writing requirements of your assignments?
  • What are the seven areas to consider when evaluating information from the Internet?

Evaluate the health information found on the internet by examining the information provided on emotional health from one of the following websites: the Center for Young Women’s Health, Young Men’s Health, or EmpowHER.  Provide an example for each area of evaluation with the information from your selected site.  Is the information provided on the website credible?  Would you use this information to educate an individual?  Explain your answers.

Your assignment must be three to four pages in length (excluding title and reference pages), and should include a minimum of three scholarly sources which are cited according to APA guidelines as outlined in the Ashford Writing Center.  At least one of your sources must be from the Ashford University Library.

Imagine you are a new graduate nurse working nights on a busy medical unit. You just received a new patient who needs to be admitted to your unit, and you just finished medicating a patient with a narcotic injection with a dose greater than ordered. Clearly understanding medication errors may lead to patient injury and even death, explain why a clinician may choose to NOT report the incident.

Review the following scenarios. Need work to be plagiarism free Scenario 1: Medical coding in a physician practice

Imagine you work in a high-pressure cardiology physician office and you are one of two medical coders. Your supervisor is very focused on the greatest reimbursement to satisfy revenue projections for the physician practice. As a result, you are asked to “up-code” billing. How can the pressure of acquiring the maximum repayment for services lead to manipulating or falsifying documentation?

Scenario 2: Administration of patient medications in the hospital setting

Imagine you are a new graduate nurse working nights on a busy medical unit. You just received a new patient who needs to be admitted to your unit, and you just finished medicating a patient with a narcotic injection with a dose greater than ordered. Clearly understanding medication errors may lead to patient injury and even death, explain why a clinician may choose to NOT report the incident.

Scenario 3: Not hiring a qualified individual because of discrimination

Imagine you are a new human resources director in a nonprofit organization and pressured to not hire Middle Eastern candidates by the organization’s CEO. In the United States, discrimination against people based on their ethnicity, race, or cultural orientation is strictly forbidden under federal and state laws. Ethical discrimination may result in the breeding of ill feelings at work, as well as reduced productivity. To eliminate these ramifications, organizations need to put forth increased effort in curbing ethical discrimination in the employment sector. What are some interventions organizations can put in place to prevent discrimination?

Write a 200-word response for each ethical scenario. Include a title page with your name and your responses.

How do you cover the story and how do you acknowledge that you are owned by the same corporation?

  • Write a 500- to 550-word essay response for Part One. Comprehensive writing skills must be used.
  • Choose one of the three media problems below as the topic for your essay response.
    • You are the news director of a local television station. The city council has just voted to close city parks 3 days a week to save money. Meanwhile, a major celebrity has died. The park story has greater effect on your viewers, but the celebrity death will get bigger ratings? Which do you make your lead story and why?
    • Your news organization is owned by a massive corporation that also owns an electronics company. It has learned that the refrigerators the electronics company makes are fire hazards and have destroyed several homes. How do you cover the story and how do you acknowledge that you are owned by the same corporation?
    • You are the chief editor of a large metropolitan daily newspaper. One of your reporters is caught fabricating sources and making up facts. How do you handle the situation, from disciplining the reporter to explaining it to your readers?
  • Solve the problem using what you have learned. Solutions must be realistic. If you think cable news networks do not have enough foreign coverage, for example, it is not enough to say you will simply hire more reporters. You must say where that money will come from. Be creative, both in the identification of the problem and, especially, in the solution.
