What ideas or phrases come to mind when you hear the term intelligence?

What ideas or phrases come to mind when you hear the term intelligence? Prior to the current emphasis on emotional and social intelligence, individuals tended to associate intelligence with one measurement: intelligence quotient or the IQ. While the IQ focuses on intellectual abilities, emotional intelligence focuses on an individual’s awareness of his or her feelings and the feelings of others, and social intelligence focuses on an individual’s interpersonal skills (Zastrow & Kirst-Ashman, 2016, pp. 506-509).

To prepare for this Discussion, read “Working With People With Disabilities: The Case of Andres” on pages 28–31 in Social Work Case Studies: Foundation Year. Consider what you have learned about social and emotional intelligence in this week’s resources as well as what you learn about the person and environment as it relates to young and middle adulthood.

By Day 3

Post a Discussion that includes the following:

  • 1. An explanation of how social and emotional intelligence are related to cultural factors
  • 2. An explanation about how you, as a social worker, might apply the concepts of emotional and/or social intelligence to the case of Andres
  • 3. An explanation of how social workers, in general, might apply social and emotional intelligence to social work practice. (Include a specific example in the explanation.)

Informed consent is an important ethical component of research and practice

Prior to beginning work on this discussion, read the Fisher (2009) article, “Replacing ‘Who is the Client?’ With a Different Ethical Question” and the APA’s Ethical Principles of Psychologists and Code of Conduct: Including 2010 Amendments (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site. paying special attention to standard 3.11.

Informed consent is an important ethical component of research and practice. It is not, however, always sufficient or appropriate for consulting, program evaluation, job effectiveness assessment, or other psychological services delivered to or through organizations because it does not always address all the necessary elements of a given situation. These facts do not negate our responsibility as psychology professionals to inform clients and those who may be impacted by our services. In the discussion you will address these issues through the following case study.

You are an industrial organizational (I/O) psychologist and have been hired to evaluate a company’s “Work From Home” policy to see if it has increased company production. In addition to a review of the employee records, the evaluation needs to include interviews with supervisors and employees on the value and limits of the policy. Since informed consent as typically considered in clinical, counseling, and research settings will not be sufficient in this instance, you will need to inform all supervisors and employees about your services.

In your initial post, briefly analyze and define who the client is in this case study. Assess your professional role as the I/O psychologist and your responsibility to the client as defined. Apply the APA’s Ethical Principles of Psychologists and Code of Conduct (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site. to this scenario, specifically addressing what information should be provided to all supervisors and employees. Explain how you would disseminate this information and ensure understanding amongst all stakeholders. Elaborate on how you would establish trust with the employees, protect employee identities, and ensure the results are used in an ethical manner.

Explain attribution theory using necessary citations

Decision-Making

Our text suggests that objective reality is often significantly different from perceived reality and is an important variable to consider when making decisions within an organization. In addition, attribution theory describes how people create the explanations for their own and others’ actions, as well as the outcomes of the applied behaviors. Based on these two premises, consider the following and then, formulate an analysis about how attribution theory and bias (according to chapter 8 in our text) can explain human behaviors within organizations and industry.

• Use, or closely follow, this template for your paper.

• Consider the following information associated with attribution theory to support to your writing about decision-making:

o perceptions

o bounded reality

o cognitive biases

o conjunction fallacy

o consistency

o consensus

o distinctiveness

o fundamental attribution error

o creative decision making

• Writing Content

o Decision-Making

 Based on our content this week, discuss the importance of rationale decision-making in an organization, using necessary citations. Include how bounded reality, cognitive biases, and conjunction fallacy might affect decision-making.

o Attribution Theory

 Explain attribution theory using necessary citations. Include a discussion about the effects of consistency, consensus, distinctiveness, and fundamental attribution error. Consider inclusion about the effects of perception, primacy and recency effects, selective perceptions, contrast effect, stereotyping to further support your discussion.

o Personal Experience: Inaccurate Judgement

 Based on our content this week, consider your own experiences with others. Have your actions ever been judged inaccurately by a person such as a boss, a peer, or a family member? How could this experience support your thesis about whether or not attribution theory and bias affect human behaviors with organization?

 Can self-serving, or other, bias affect one’s perception of a behavior?

o Creative Decision Making

 Explain how creative decision-making can improve our ability to make better decisions, considering the numerous obstacles to do so. Include an analysis about how good decision making can potentially affect productivity and job satisfaction.

Writing considerations:

a. The introduction paragraph should introduce your topic and clearly explain what the paper will address.

b. Headings can be used to organize your information. See template . (Each heading should include at least two paragraphs – minimum.)

c. Each paragraph should make a point which can be linked back to your introduction paragraph. Design the topic sentence to embody what the paragraph will entail.

d. The most important consideration in the body paragraphs is the argument that you want to develop (is or is not perceptions, attribution theory and bias applicable?) in response to the topic (applicability of perception, attribution theory and bias). This argument is developed by making and linking points in and between paragraphs.

e. The conclusion paragraph should restate your thesis (your suggestion that perceptions, attribution theory and bias does or does not apply to human behaviors in organizations.)

Your assignment should be a minimum of five to six double-spaced pages, and should adequately discuss the topic, demonstrate maturating self-awareness, and include at least one peer-reviewed source, in addition to your text. Use the rubric to check for thoroughness. Include frequent citation to resources.

The reliability of the WPT-R is impressive as it reaches reliability scores of .90 and is a consistent test of general mental abilities.

Assessment Instrument 1:

Wonderlic Personnel Test-revised (WPT-R)

This assessment tool is now known as the Wonderlic Contemporary Cognitive Ability Test under its revision in 2007. The reliability of the WPT-R is impressive as it reaches reliability scores of .90 and is a consistent test of general mental abilities. Some concerns with the WPT-R is that if a person native language is not English, they will unfairly be penalized on this particular test. Sine the test is timed, it can also have a negative impact for those who do not speak English or for those who are more advanced in years. (Gregory, 2014) From the onset of the WPT and the continuation of the WPT-R version, this measurement tool has been helpful in providing a brief 12 minuet assessment tool, that could both save money and time for companies and secure a valid reading of an individual. Back when the workforce was changing, and reduced staffing was in effect, so the WPT has been a great tool for companies to use in assessing individual for needed positions. (Edinger, Shipley, Watkins, & Hammett, 1985).

Assessment Instrument 2:

Employment Productivity Index

This is a paper-and Pencil integrity test. Integrity test measure a candidate’s experiences in relation to “honesty, dependability, trustworthiness, and pro-social behaviors.” Usually integrity test has two sections. Section one deals with the individual’s feeling, condemnations of, or endorsement of theft. Section 2 of these types of tests often cover any admission of theft in the work place. It has been found that integrity test can be more easily faked, and integrity test have been found to be less useful in the production of work performance overall. (Gregory, 2014 pg. 11.6).

Integrity test are designed to weed out high-risk candidates who can be counterproductive to work proficiencies. There is also a concern to filter out those who may be vulnerable to fraud and bribery, and caution in seeing if a potential employee may be prone to violence in the workplace. (Fine, 2013).

Choose one of the following cultures: Hispanic, African American, or Asian American, and analyze how being a part of this culture might affect Harvey and his family’s treatment and recovery.

Harvey is married and has 2 teenage children. Harvey has been heavily drinking on a regular basis for the past 10 years.  In the past his wife often covered for him with his job, and usually made excuses for him with his children and his friends. Harvey has not attended his son’s baseball games this year, and he missed his daughter’s performance in the school play due to having been passed out from drinking. At this time, he is at risk for losing his job due to excessive absences, and he was recently arrested for a DUI. Harvey has realized that his drinking is adversely affecting all aspects of his life and he is ready to quit.

Directions:

Create an 8-10 slide Power Point presentation to discuss treatment plans for Harvey and his family. Use the speaker notes in the slide show to further discuss the topics on each slide. In addition make sure you have a title slide and a slide with references (in APA format).  Please reference at least two peer-reviewed journal articles in your presentation along with appropriate information from the assigned weekly readings. In your presentation:

  1. Evaluate the following methods of treatment and develop a treatment plan for Harvey: Alcoholics Anonymous, Transactional Analysis, and Family Systems Therapy. Please:
  • Provide  an assessment of Harvey’s situation and what he needs from treatment.
  • Evaluate and discuss the at least one pro and con of each of the following treatment methods: Alcoholics Anonymous, Transactional Analysis and Family Systems Therapy.
  • Develop a treatment plan  for Harvey:
    • Choose at least one of the above treatments for the plan.
    • Address at least two issues that Harvey needs to resolve in treatment.
    • Include at least three steps for Harvey’s recovery.
  1. Explain Brief Strategic Family Therapy and when it is used. Next, do the following:
  • Develop a treatment plan for Harvey’s wife.
    • Address her specific needs as the spouse of a substance abuser.
    • Include at least three steps for her recovery.
    • Take care that this plan is specifically addressing her recovery, and not how she can help Harvey recover.
  • Develop a treatment plan for Harvey’s children: Address their specific needs as adolescent children of a substance abuser
    • Include at least three steps for their recovery.
    • Recommend at least two substance use prevention strategies aimed at adolescent children of substance abusers.
  1. Choose one of the following cultures: Hispanic, African American, or Asian American, and analyze how being a part of this culture might affect Harvey and his family’s treatment and recovery.  Explain at least two issues present in treating substance abuse within that culture.

How does the lens from which you view the world shape your approach to research inquiry?

Discussion: Philosophy of Science

How does the lens from which you view the world shape your approach to research inquiry? Why is it important as a scholar-practitioner engaged in research to acknowledge your worldview?

The Learning Resources in this first week will help you answer these questions, and they will provide you with a foundation in the philosophy of science that will help you appreciate various research designs and methods. With this foundation, you will be encouraged to reflect on how your assumptions about the acquisition of truth and the nature of the world influence your approach to the research process.

For this Discussion, you will identify an area of interest for a possible research topic. As you read about the different philosophical orientations in this week’s readings, consider if one of these orientations most closely aligns with your worldview and a particular approach to research.

With these thoughts in mind:

By Day 4

Post a brief description of your topic of research interest. Next, state the philosophical orientation that reflects your worldview and explain the epistemological and ontological assumptions of this orientation. Then, explain how these assumptions lend themselves to one or more research approaches.

Be sure to support your Main Issue Post and Response Post with reference to the week’s Learning Resources and other scholarly evidence in APA Style.

For this discussion, identify three specific measures for a management assessment center addressing selection, placement, promotion, and career training.

For this discussion, take into consideration the factors that affect a test’s utility, which was identified in your Psychological Testing and Assessment text as psychometric soundness, costs, and benefits (pages 212–218), as well as practical considerations when conducting utility analyses, which includes pool of applicants, complexity of the job, and use of cut scores (pages 232–235).

For this discussion, identify three specific measures for a management assessment center addressing selection, placement, promotion, and career training.

For the purposes identified above, identify a specific instrument for each of the following areas:

· Ability or aptitude testing.

· Occupational career or interests.

· Personality.

Then, discuss one advantage and one disadvantage in selecting these tests for the battery.

Next, identify at least one issue regarding factors of utility and utility analysis with this battery of tests.

Finally, include how you would evaluate the effectiveness of incorporating your measures into this battery. How would you determine that the three tests are adequate for addressing the purposes of selection, placement, promotion, and career training?

Include, in your discussion, if and how computerized assessment could be incorporated into your battery or evaluation.
