What ideas or phrases come to mind when you hear the term intelligence? Prior to the current emphasis on emotional and social intelligence, individuals tended to associate intelligence with one measurement: intelligence quotient or the IQ. While the IQ focuses on intellectual abilities, emotional intelligence focuses on an individual’s awareness of his or her feelings and the feelings of others, and social intelligence focuses on an individual’s interpersonal skills (Zastrow & Kirst-Ashman, 2016, pp. 506-509).

To prepare for this Discussion, read “Working With People With Disabilities: The Case of Andres” on pages 28–31 in Social Work Case Studies: Foundation Year. Consider what you have learned about social and emotional intelligence in this week’s resources as well as what you learn about the person and environment as it relates to young and middle adulthood.

Choose a theory to write about.  Write a few brief sentences about the theory and some of its constructs.  Name two benefits and two places you see this theory could improve and how.  Use at least two references in your response, one may be your textbook. Please try to choose a different theory than your classmates.

Respond to two peers.  Ask questions about what you are not clear on or questions to help the original poster to think more deeply about the theory.  Ideas for your peer responses can include, but are not limited to: Adding to the benefits or areas of improvement, asking the original poster to talk about something more in depth, working from your personal knowledge, asking questions that you think would help in the future with respect to working with this theory in the future.

Decision-Making

Our text suggests that objective reality is often significantly different from perceived reality and is an important variable to consider when making decisions within an organization. In addition, attribution theory describes how people create the explanations for their own and others’ actions, as well as the outcomes of the applied behaviors. Based on these two premises, consider the following and then, formulate an analysis about how attribution theory and bias (according to chapter 8 in our text) can explain human behaviors within organizations and industry.

 Based on our content this week, discuss the importance of rationale decision-making in an organization, using necessary citations. Include how bounded reality, cognitive biases, and conjunction fallacy might affect decision-making.

o Attribution Theory

 Explain attribution theory using necessary citations. Include a discussion about the effects of consistency, consensus, distinctiveness, and fundamental attribution error. Consider inclusion about the effects of perception, primacy and recency effects, selective perceptions, contrast effect, stereotyping to further support your discussion.

o Personal Experience: Inaccurate Judgement

 Based on our content this week, consider your own experiences with others. Have your actions ever been judged inaccurately by a person such as a boss, a peer, or a family member? How could this experience support your thesis about whether or not attribution theory and bias affect human behaviors with organization?

 Can self-serving, or other, bias affect one’s perception of a behavior?

o Creative Decision Making

 Explain how creative decision-making can improve our ability to make better decisions, considering the numerous obstacles to do so. Include an analysis about how good decision making can potentially affect productivity and job satisfaction.

Writing considerations:

a. The introduction paragraph should introduce your topic and clearly explain what the paper will address.

b. Headings can be used to organize your information. See template . (Each heading should include at least two paragraphs – minimum.)

c. Each paragraph should make a point which can be linked back to your introduction paragraph. Design the topic sentence to embody what the paragraph will entail.

d. The most important consideration in the body paragraphs is the argument that you want to develop (is or is not perceptions, attribution theory and bias applicable?) in response to the topic (applicability of perception, attribution theory and bias). This argument is developed by making and linking points in and between paragraphs.

e. The conclusion paragraph should restate your thesis (your suggestion that perceptions, attribution theory and bias does or does not apply to human behaviors in organizations.)

Your assignment should be a minimum of five to six double-spaced pages, and should adequately discuss the topic, demonstrate maturating self-awareness, and include at least one peer-reviewed source, in addition to your text. Use the rubric to check for thoroughness. Include frequent citation to resources.

Harvey is married and has 2 teenage children. Harvey has been heavily drinking on a regular basis for the past 10 years.  In the past his wife often covered for him with his job, and usually made excuses for him with his children and his friends. Harvey has not attended his son’s baseball games this year, and he missed his daughter’s performance in the school play due to having been passed out from drinking. At this time, he is at risk for losing his job due to excessive absences, and he was recently arrested for a DUI. Harvey has realized that his drinking is adversely affecting all aspects of his life and he is ready to quit.

Directions:

Create an 8-10 slide Power Point presentation to discuss treatment plans for Harvey and his family. Use the speaker notes in the slide show to further discuss the topics on each slide. In addition make sure you have a title slide and a slide with references (in APA format).  Please reference at least two peer-reviewed journal articles in your presentation along with appropriate information from the assigned weekly readings. In your presentation:

1. Evaluate the following methods of treatment and develop a treatment plan for Harvey: Alcoholics Anonymous, Transactional Analysis, and Family Systems Therapy. Please:

• Provide  an assessment of Harvey’s situation and what he needs from treatment.
• Evaluate and discuss the at least one pro and con of each of the following treatment methods: Alcoholics Anonymous, Transactional Analysis and Family Systems Therapy.
• Develop a treatment plan  for Harvey:
  • Choose at least one of the above treatments for the plan.
  • Address at least two issues that Harvey needs to resolve in treatment.
  • Include at least three steps for Harvey’s recovery.

1. Explain Brief Strategic Family Therapy and when it is used. Next, do the following:

• Develop a treatment plan for Harvey’s wife.
  • Address her specific needs as the spouse of a substance abuser.
  • Include at least three steps for her recovery.
  • Take care that this plan is specifically addressing her recovery, and not how she can help Harvey recover.
• Develop a treatment plan for Harvey’s children: Address their specific needs as adolescent children of a substance abuser
  • Include at least three steps for their recovery.
  • Recommend at least two substance use prevention strategies aimed at adolescent children of substance abusers.

1. Choose one of the following cultures: Hispanic, African American, or Asian American, and analyze how being a part of this culture might affect Harvey and his family’s treatment and recovery.  Explain at least two issues present in treating substance abuse within that culture.
