Identify and explain an example of “culture shock” either from your own experience or from a movie or book. Explain how your personal assumptions were challenged.

This week’s study notes and your textbook emphasized the importance of understanding multiculturalism in effective interviewing.  We often take for granted our own assumptions, values, and ways of perceiving the world until we encounter people from another culture. Recall a time when you experienced “culture shock” by traveling to another part of the world or by interacting with someone from another culture and were surprised by some of your own assumptions. If you have not interacted with people from different cultures, think about a book or film in which you became aware of your own assumptions and discovered that they were not universal. If you are having trouble, consider renting the movies Slumdog Millionaire, The House of Sand and Fog, Mi Familia, or Double Happiness.

For this discussion assignment:

  1. Identify and explain an example of “culture shock” either from your own experience or from a movie or book.
  2. Explain how your personal assumptions were challenged.
  3. Discuss what you learned about your own beliefs and if your beliefs were changed in any way.
  4. As appropriate, cite the online course, the textbook, and other credible, scholarly sources to substantiate the points you are making.
  5. Apply APA standards for writing and citations to your work.

M2 QUESTION

Jacob, a 13-year-old male, is caught shoplifting a hoodie at a local department store. Security detained Jacob and called the police. Jacob was then interviewed at the local police station. His parents were called and attended his interview with the detective.

The detective asks Jacob, “Why did you take the garment? Didn’t you think you would be caught? What did you think your parents would say? Why did you do such a stupid thing?”

  • What do you think is wrong in this scenario?
  • What do you think Jacob is feeling?
  • What do you think Jacob’s nonverbal behavior would exhibit?
  • If you were the detective, how would your questions differ? Give an example of three questions you would have presented Jacob.
  • What type of interview strategy would you have used?
  • In what type of environment would you conduct the interview?

Respond to at least two other posts and cite, as appropriate, the online course, the textbook, and other credible, scholarly sources to substantiate the points you are making.

M3Locate on the internet a video of an interview. You may choose a news interview or any other interview you can locate.

Your job is to review the interview, and identify at least three instances of the use of interview techniques (paraphrase, summary, silence, reflection, or interpretation). In your discussion post, provide quotes of what the interviewer and interviewee said (or did not say in the case of silence) that demonstrate each interview technique. Be sure to identify the technique for which you are providing each example.

After you identify the interview techniques (you may use the same technique or different ones) with your three examples, also provide an analysis of the effectiveness of each technique. That is, was the technique effective? How did the interviewee respond to the technique?

Be sure to provide a link to the video clip you are analyzing so that your classmates may also view the clip. Please be sure you cite all the sources you used in the assignment.

In your response posts to your classmates, view the clips that your classmates have located. Do you agree with the techniques that your classmates have identified? Your classmates’ analysis of the effect of the technique? Please explain why you agree or do not agree.

M4 QUESTION

What are some of the similarities and differences between motivational interviewing techniques used in a counseling setting and persuasive techniques used in a business sales setting?  What are the ethical considerations in each setting? Be sure to cite as appropriate, the online course, the textbook, and other credible, scholarly sources to substantiate the points you are making.  Apply APA standards for writing and citations to your work.

Imagine you are tasked with conducting a counseling intake interview with a 19 year old college student who is feeling sad, unmotivated, and worried about his grades. It is the student’s first semester at school, and he is finding that he has gone from being an A student in high school to a B- student in college. He has also moved 500 miles away from his hometown to attend school.

This week’s lecture discussed a number of counseling approaches (cognitive, humanistic, psychodynamic, and behavioral), that can be used to guide and understand an interview.

Which approach would use to guide this intake interview? Explain why you think this approach is a good choice for this particular interview.  Also develop at least 5 questions for your interview and explain how the questions fit with the approach you chose.

You may use any of the approaches discussed in this week’s lecture or you may also use one from:

Define the environmental or occupational problem affecting human populations that you will analyze for your final project.

This week, you will formulate a concise statement of the problem.

Most environmental health issues involve a variety of elements with overlapping or distinct causes, stakeholder groups, and solutions. Selecting an important, specific element of the issue is essential when formulating realistic ways to address and improve the environmental issue. This specific aspect of the issue is known as the problem and can be defined in a concise problem statement. The problem statement includes the purpose of the problem-solving effort, defines its scope, and states the specific objective of the problem-solving effort in the form of a question.

The three elements of the statement are—explaining how things should be; identifying a significant gap; and asking a question about one major way to improve the current situation. For example:

The food you purchase should be free from levels of pesticide residues that are hazardous to human health, but many commercially used pesticides have not been tested using newer techniques to detect harm that they may cause during prenatal development or childhood. Should the EPA require that pesticides used on food crops be reevaluated using the new tests to ensure that children are fully protected, and if so, which tests? Employees who work with lead have a right to expect that their health will be protected if their workplace adheres to the OSHA lead standard, but the OSHA lead standard has not been updated since 1978, despite a great deal of new epidemiologic and toxicologic research about lead toxicity. Should the OSHA lead standard be revised, and if so, what should the new provisions be? Consumers often trust that products and services that they purchase are safe unless they are advised otherwise. Recently, nail salons have been the focus of worker safety initiatives because they use hazardous chemicals such as methacrylates, acetates, toluene, and formaldehydes. Are consumers adequately protected from hazardous chemicals when they receive services in nail salons? The process of developing a problem statement is extremely useful because you will choose a defined focus, which will guide the rest of the work leading to a proposed solution to the problem.

For this assignment:

Choose a specific aspect of the topic that you selected last week as your problem. Define the environmental or occupational problem affecting human populations that you will analyze for your final project. Write your problem statement in 2–3 sentences in a Microsoft Word document. These sentences should be questions that you intend to explore in your research paper. Justify, in 1–2 paragraphs, why you chose to focus your analysis of this multifaceted issue to the specific problem as stated in your problem statement.

Assignment 3 Grading Criteria Maximum Points Provided a problem statement that clearly and concisely defined the environmental health problem affecting human populations. 20 Provided a justification paragraph that mentioned the breadth of issues that could be addressed for the chosen topic (with at least one example) and justified the focus on the specific issue defined in the problem statement. 20 Described the problem statement in the form of questions. 10 Presented a structured document free from spelling and grammatical errors. 5 Properly cited sources using APA format. 5 Total:60
