Case Diagnosis and Management
Select a case study from the recommended Case Book by Spitzer, et. al. or chose to write about some maladaptive behaviors you have observed in yourself or in someone you know (You must use a pseudonym in either of those cases). You can describe a full blown DSM syndrome or it can be a shadow syndrome (a borderline case, a case that may be almost diagnosable but lacks one or more of the official criteria). Write the paper in the third person and in a formal style (“Mr. Smith has experienced generalized anxiety that has increased in severity over the past five years” instead of “I’ve been experiencing anxiety lately and it appears to be increasing”).
Describe in detail why you would give the case a DSM diagnosis (or non-clinical, shadow syndrome, diagnosis). Provide a history of the problem, a clinical appraisal of it, and a basic treatment plan involving a specific approach, and describe how the problem might be resolved from this theoretical orientation. When you plot the treatment plan, consider the reasons why each intervention, strategy, or technique might be helpful. Describe when and how you would employ each technique or strategy.
