Revision BIBLIOGRAPHY Case Study

Topic Biofilms; what it is, how to treat?

Please submit one well-defined, clear and concise research question.

An annotated bibliography (AB) is a list of citations (journal articles, books, etc) where each citation is followed by a brief (about 150-200 words) evaluative and descriptive paragraph of the article.  The purpose of the annotation is to inform the reader of the relevance, accuracy, and quality of the sources cited.

  1. Locate and record citations of peer-reviewed articles and scholarly books and e-books that may contain useful information and ideas on your chosen topics. Briefly examine and review the actual literature that you have located.
  2. Choose a minimum of 10 of those works that provide a variety of perspectives on your topic(s) of interest. All references should have been published in 2016 or later!
  3. Cite each article using APA style.
  4. Write an annotation of each article by summarizing, assessing, and reflecting on the work you are reading.

Kidney failure case study

POST 1:

If stuck in a raft and run out of water, do not drink seawater. It is loaded with salt! We are only meant to ingest small amounts of salt, seawater contains deadly amounts to the human body (NOAA, 2014). Drinking seawater will cause you to die of dehydration your kidneys can only make urine that is less salty than water. So all the salt that is in seawater, you need to expel. You would have to urinate more out than what you drank. Thus, causing dehydration.

Kidney failure is when approximately 85-90% of kidney function is gone (NKF, 2022). When you have kidney failure your kidneys do not adequately work to keep you alive. Treatment is available but there is no cure. Healthy kidneys are used for important processes of the body such as removing waste products and extra water from your body, aid in making healthy red blood cells, and help maintain blood pressure (NKF, 2022). These are all crucial for maintaining homeostasis and the survival of living organisms. Homeostasis is a self-regulating process that regulates internal variables needed to sustain life (BYJUS, 2021). This allows the body to maintain a stable internal environment regardless of any external forces.

Kidneys are a type of filtering plant for the body. They separate toxins from the good stuff, nutrients, and get rid of the waste (Kane, 2022). When the kidneys, or kidney, is not functioning properly it causes this waste to back up in the body. This can lead to high blood pressure, heart failure, and neurological issues. Ultimately, kidney disruption can cause death. Many different diseases and disorders can cause kidney failure such as diabetes, high blood pressure, urinary reflux, glomerulonephritis (inflammation of the little filters), polycystic kidney disease, some medications and others. We have not had anyone in our family with kidney failure, however, several of us have kidney scarring due to chronic kidney stones and are followed by nephrology. This is more than likely hereditary as my father (74 yoa), myself, and both of our daughters (ages 23 and 17) all suffer from multiple stones and kidney infections a year. We had a neighbor once that we helped when she would fall ill. She had just turned forty but had a kidney transplant eight years prior. She was going to dialysis four times a week and was on the list for another transplant as the kidney was also failing. It is not an easy thing to watch someone devote hours every day, several days a week to dialysis just to live. She wasn’t able to drink like she wanted too and lived on ice chips for hydration.

POST 2:

When you drink water from the sea, your body will need more water to get rid of the high level of salt present in the water. Therefore, if you keep drinking seawater, you’ll keep adding to the amount of salt you need to get out of your body. Our body observes water through the process of osmosis. Osmosis is a process by which the molecules of a solvent pass from a solution of low concentration to a solution of high concentration through a semi-permeable membrane (Bozeman 2021).

In our bodies, we have cell members which allow water to pass through but not particle dissolves in water. The salt inside and outside our cells remains in equilibrium. When we drink water, water from the outside of our cell moves inside of our cell to remain at an isotonic state. If you drink too much seawater the salinity outside your cells will increase rapidly. This forces too many water molecules to move out of your cells so even if you’re already dehydrated, your cells will release water rather than absorb it. Thus, drinking seawater is not only a bad idea but potentially fatal.

A healthy kidney maintains homeostasis through the removal of harmful wastes from the body and controls the balance of substances in the blood such as water, acids, ions, and salts. The kidneys and homeostasis are vital for internal health and function. Kidneys act as a natural filter for all the waste products produced in the body, they also help to regulate the fluid and electrolyte balance (BD Editors, 2018). They help to keep the blood pressure within normal limits and secrete a hormone that helps in red blood cell production. When kidneys fail to perform their normal function, the waste products accumulate in the blood and the fluid balance is disturbed, this is termed as kidney failure on ESRD (End-Stage Renal Disease), which can happen gradually or suddenly(New Health Advisor, 2019). People with ESRD need dialysis or transplant to sustain life.

TestObservations

Gram stain

When doing the gram staining, it was negative because the bacteria accepted the safranin after

decolorization and stained pink or red on the gram

staining.

FTM

The bacteria were mostly at the top of the test and moved slowly through the who thing, so I

knew it was facultative anaerobes.

Starch test When performing the starch test and finding that

there is no clear zone formation, so it was negative

4.

4.What was the species of your assigned microorganism? Describe how you used your dichotomous key to come to this conclusion. Include any relevant tests and how the

results helped you draw your conclusion. I used my key by going through the test and determining whether it was a yes or no, negative or positive, whether the cell morphology was shiny mucoids and slightly raised, or whether the cell morphology was rods, and that the cell arrangement was single and even the gram staining was negative and such ftm tube detected FA (facultative anaerobes), which led me to the conclusion

that it was Escherichia coil.

Insert screenshots of your tests for your microorganism:

Regular physical activity thesis

Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans 2nd edition

MESSAGE FROM THE SECRETARY

Regular physical activity is one of the most important things people can do to improve their health. Moving more and sitting less have tremendous benefits for everyone, regardless of age, sex, race, ethnicity, or current fitness level. Individuals with a chronic disease or a disability benefit from regular physical activity, as do women who are pregnant. The scientific evidence continues to build—physical activity is linked with even more positive health outcomes than we previously thought. And, even better, benefits can start accumulating with small amounts of, and immediately after doing, physical activity.

Today, about half of all American adults—117 million people—have one or more preventable chronic diseases. Seven of the ten most common chronic diseases are favorably influenced by regular physical activity. Yet nearly 80 percent of adults are not meeting the key guidelines for both aerobic and muscle-strengthening activity, while only about half meet the key guidelines for aerobic physical activity. This lack of physical activity is linked to approximately $117 billion in annual health care costs and about 10 percent of premature mortality.

This new edition of the Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans has the potential to change that situation. It is grounded in the most current scientific evidence and informed by the recommendations of the 2018 Physical Activity Guidelines Advisory Committee. This Federal advisory committee, which was composed of prestigious researchers in the fields of physical activity, health, and medicine, conducted a multifaceted, robust analysis of the available scientific literature. Their work culminated in the 2018 Physical Activity Guidelines Advisory Committee Scientific Report, which provided recommendations to the Federal Government on physical activity, sedentary behavior, and health. Informed by this Scientific Report and by public and Federal agency comments, the new edition provides guidance on the amounts and types of physical activity necessary to maintain or improve overall health and reduce the risk of, or even prevent, chronic disease.

The Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans is an essential resource for health professionals and policymakers as they design and implement physical activity programs, policies, and promotion initiatives. It provides information that helps Americans make healthy choices for themselves and their families, and discusses evidence-based, community-level interventions that can make being physically active the easy choice in all the places where people live, learn, work, and play.

Progress to reverse the high rates of inactivity-related chronic diseases and low rates of physical activity will require comprehensive and coordinated strategies. The Physical Activity Guidelines is an important part of a complex and integrated solution to promote health and to reduce the burden of chronic disease in our country. We all have a role to play in this critical effort. I invite you to join me in helping our country be more physically active. If we all move more and sit less today and work toward meeting the Physical Activity Guidelines ourselves, we will be well on our way to creating a healthier Nation and ensuring everyone can live healthier and more active lives.
