The Scientific Method Case Study

General Directions

This assignment has two parts to it.  You will choose a biology-related news article and use it for both parts of the assignment.  Follow the instructions below to help choose your article.

Directions for Part 1

For this assignment, you will post a biology-related news article. This article must have come out within the last two weeks of your posting.

EACH post must be UNIQUE and tell a different story to get credit! Only the first person to post a specific story will get credit.

Also, make sure that your article describes an actual experiment that has already been completed.  This way the experiment will have a hypothesis, experiment, results, and conclusions.  A “study” is often just observational, and no controls are set.

There is a second part to this assignment (later in the semester) asking you to list the controls for the experimental study, which is why your article needs to be an actual experiment rather than an observational study.

First, please review the information about controls BEFORE selecting your article, so that you have selected one that is an experimental study.

Review BOTH resources below to understand Controls:

Here is a link to information about controlled experiments (Links to an external site.) as presented by the Khan Academy.

Review this PowerPoint presentation on The Scientific Method (it will help you with analyzing the article you choose also).

Next, use these prompts to complete Part 1 Biology in the News:

  • First copy/paste the title of the article in the message title.
  • Then include the news source and date the article came out followed by a LINK to the article.
  • Write 2-3 paragraphs.
    • The first paragraph (50-100 words) should summarize the article addressing the following: who did the research, what question were they asking and what experimental system did they use.  Hit the return or enter key twice to separate paragraphs
    • Then write another paragraph (around 50 words)  addressing their findings (conclusions) and a personal statement as to why you think the article is significant for the general public.
  • ***NOTE: Make sure you use your OWN words when summarizing the article! Otherwise it’s considered plagiarism and you could receive a “0” for the assignment.***

Discuss at least three characteristics of your vision of a scientist.

Science in the Media

There is nothing like reading a good book or watching a great movie for a little escapism and entertainment. With all of the television channels out there and access to the internet, you can watch just about anything you want at any time. In Unit 2, you talked about the science involved with technology, but in this Assignment, you are going to turn the tables and delve into how the media portrays science.

How does a pop culture portrayal of science and scientists impact the average person’s view of what science is and how research is conducted? Can what is presented by the media affect how the general populace views a particular research field? What might the long-term impacts of such a depiction be? These are just a few questions that you will reflect upon in this Assignment.

Your paper should address the following questions: 1.When you hear the word “scientist” what do you envision? Which famous people or characters from the media come into your mind? What characteristics do they have in common? Discuss at least three characteristics of your vision of a scientist. 2.Has your image of what a scientist does and how they look changed over time? If so, how has this changed and what influenced you? 3.Are fictional scientists usually the heroes, villains, or a combination of the two? Provide at least two detailed examples to support your position. 4.How is science portrayed in fictional media (television shows, movies, music, books, etc.)? Is it seen as a positive, negative, or neutral force in the world? Give specific examples supporting your position. 5.Do you think the portrayal of scientists in the various forms of media influences how society views people in this profession? Why, or why not? 6.Can the portrayal of science in media influence how certain research and technology is viewed, and accepted, by the general public (e.g., cloning)?

Your Final Project should be written in an essay format, with an introduction and conclusion. The paper will require you to include details from research including the course materials and sources you locate on your own. Use APA format to cite your sources of information, both within parenthetical citations and also within a reference page at the end of the project.

Basic Writing Expectations:

•A minimum of 1500 words, not counting the title or reference pages •At least 3 academic resources utilized •Include a title page, double space, font size 10 or 12 •Include a highly developed viewpoint/thesis, purpose, and exceptional content •Demonstrate superior organization: use logic •Free of grammar and spelling errors •No evidence of plagiarism. Note: no more than 10% of your paper should be direct quotes •Use the APA style for all in-text citations, references, and body of paper

Turnitin Analysis

A special feature is available to help you with reviewing your Unit 9 Final Project for plagiarism. When you submit your Assignment to the Unit 9 Final Project Dropbox, your Assignment will automatically be analyzed by the plagiarism detection tool, Turnitin. Soon after you submit your Assignment, you will be able to view the Turnitin Originality Report. Originality Reports provide a summary of matching or highly similar text found in a submitted paper. When an Originality Report is available for viewing, an icon will appear in the report column of the Assignment Inbox. Originality Reports are only available in the InBox. For this reason, you will need to download the report prior to the grading of the Unit 9 final Project. To do this, click on the print icon at the bottom of the Originality Report. This will prepare a readable, PDF version of the Originality Report that you can save to your computer.

Disease of the immune system

Please respond 100 words for 2 prompts. No format or cites are needed.

(Original post question for your reference; Select one of the following vulnerabilities or another that you have heard about before. Some examples are:
Organ transplant, Disease of the immune system, A form of cancer. Answer the following in your description:
How are problems detected at the microbial level?
How does it interact with the immune system?
How has the information from this week changed the way you previously thought about the scenario? )
Prompt 1: I will be discussing Type 1 Diabetes. Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease where the immune system is attacking the cells in the pancreas that makes the insulin. Insulin is what removes the sugar from the blood to convert it into an energy source. Without insulin, the sugar cannot get into the cells to do what it is supposed to do. The main screening test to diagnose type 1 Diabetes is the random blood sugar test.
It tells the provider how much sugar is circulating in the patient’s blood at the moment. The second test is the glycated hemoglobin test or what is known to be called the A1C test. This test gives the average amount of blood sugar of the patient for the past three months. It is the test that shows how much sugar is attached to the hemoglobin.
The more sugar is attached the higher the sugar levels are. To distinguish type 1 and type 2, the provider will check specific autoantibodies tests such as insulin antibodies and islet cell antibodies. The information I gathered regarding this disease and this week’s topic helped me learn more about the disease process of other illnesses. It has given me a different point of view.
Prompt 2: Melanoma is a serious form of skin cancer. It occurs when the pigment-producing cells that give color to the skin become cancerous. It unfortunately is quite common at more than 200,000 cases in the US a year. A biopsy on the possible area will be performed such as shave (tangential), punch, optical, excisional, or incisional biopsy.
The cells of the sample will then be examined and tests may be performed to confirm the diagnosis. These tests include immunohistochemistry, fluorescence in situ hybridization, and gene expression profiling. These tests can show the seriousness of the disease including the motorícele rate which is how fast the cells are actively dividing.
Gene changes are also examined including a mutation in the BRAF gene which is quite common in cases. Melanoma is one of the most immunogenic tumors. Its interaction with the immune system is still being investigated. The disease itself can prevent the detection and attacks from the immune system. Although T cells have been shown to interact with melanoma cells.
The more I learn about the disease and its effects on the immune system. The more I am fascinated with how our body really works. I always knew that the diseases we have been discussing were harmful, but the way that they can either trick or hide from our natural immune system is fascinating although terrifying. The adaptations that they can do to become more harmful at such a quick rate is a big investigation that is making leaps and bounds each day.
