  • Select either Case A or Case B:

  • Case A: Kevin, a 3-year-old boy, stands screaming in a hospital crib as he watches staff walk past his room. His mother has just left to go to the cafeteria for lunch. She rarely leaves his side, even though she is a single mom with three older children. Neighbors have offered to help watch the older children any time she needs to leave the house, especially for doctor visits. Kevin is dehydrated due to gastroenteritis, and has an IV in his right hand, which is swaddled in gauze to prevent him from pulling the IV out. He is right-handed, and cannot play as well with his left hand. He cannot eat or drink anything yet, even though he is beginning to feel hungry.

  • Case B: Sarah is a 9-year-old girl with cystic fibrosis. She has developed pneumonia again, and the doctors want to try a new medication along with a new type of breathing therapy to help deliver oxygen to her lungs. The new therapy must be done in a large, new medical center Sarah has never been to. Her mother will be unable to come in the treatment room with her, but she will be allowed to accompany Sarah up until the department waiting room.

Visit the WebMD® Web site if you choose to learn more about the child’s illness in case study you selected.

  • Post your response to the following: Indicate which case study you selected in the subject line of your post. What developmentally appropriate methods can be used to help the child cope with and prepare for various aspects of their hospital visit? How would you address the child’s emotional needs? What adjustments must the child make?
