Chapter Discussion Questions Grading Guideline

Criteria for full credit:

· Answer ALL discussion questions provided at the end of the assigned chapter.

· Provide responses to discussion questions that are intelligent and display an understanding of the material covered in the chapter.

· Provide answers with material directly from information provided within the chapter (be sure to reference a page number) and you may also elaborate with opinions and examples.

· Utilize 12 point Times New Roman font, single-spaced with 1” margins

· Provide the page number in your textbook that you utilized to reference your response

While I am interested in hearing your opinions with these questions, you should support any stated opinions with facts, theories, and published literature. Opinions matter, particularly when well-argued!

It is expected that each chapter will require 1 to 2 pages fully and adequately respond to all discussion questions with each chapter.

Failure of a student to adequately respond and reflect on ALL questions for a chapter will result in a grade of “0” for that particular chapter’s questions. Students will either receive a grade of “15” or a grade of “0” for each chapter.

Chapter 1 Discussion Questions

1. Distinguish among corporate, business, and functional strategies. How does each strategy relate to human resources management? Why?

According to the text on page 12, there are three levels that most organizations formulate strategies. Corporate is a higher level strategy that applies to all businesses and industries managed by an organization. Business applies to a particular industry or market and is not applicable to all of those managed by the organization. Functional strategy is applicable so specific departments (or functions) and would include those applicable to marketing, finance, human resources, etc.

Human resources is a main function within an organization that should be considered and implemented with any strategic organization growth. Specifically, the book references to recruiting and training large numbers of qualified employees to achieve an increase in operations.
