CMN598 University of New Hampshire Uses of Lying Research Paper

The final research assignment is addressed to one of the following question

a) “What is lying used for”

b) As you answer this choose a perspective, the lie-teller OR someone ‘uncovering’ a lie (the truth machine). Based on which perspective you choose there are two answers to the question that correctly reflect understanding of the course material.

Bring together morality, interaction, social order and knowledge

If you choose the perspective of the lie-teller

EXAMPLES: For this you must use the ‘find a liar’, ‘paternalistic lie’ and ‘TMI’ examples to make your argument. You must use your examples to make your argument in addition to literature (see rubric).

This answer emphasises Scott, Sacks and Goffman.

If you choose the perspective of the ‘lie uncoverer’

EXAMPLES: For this you must use the ‘find a liar’, ‘paternalistic/ethical lie’ and an episode of Maury/Dr Phil/Cops in which they ‘expose’ a liar and the liar admits to it.

This answer emphasises Llewellyn & Whittle, and Lynch & Bogen.

FOR ALL ANSWERS For full credit you must also draw on course readings, especially Scott (on lying), Lleywellyn and Whittle, Lych and Bogen and Sacks.

It is essential to represent an understanding of modules 2, 4 and 5 in your answer.

I expect 1,500 to 2500 words. I expect more than 5 (that means 6+) peer reviewed (journal articles and books) references from outside the course material. Marks for additional readings will reflect how closely they are related to Discursive psychology, Goffman or ‘everyone has to lie’ (i.e. use emcawiki)

Web pages and newspaper pieces are not peer reviewed. Web pages summarising journal articles should not be cited.

You may choose to conduct original research related to these questions, it must use the CA literature and Goffman. Use the emcawiki

Research and use ‘discursive psychology’ it will be of the most use.

Do NOT talk about why people lie. That is irrelevant, and cognitivist. Talking about why people lie will cost you points.

Do NOT argue ‘lying is (always or usually) bad/wrong’ that ignores and over simplifies a great deal of course content.
