Analyze the ethical principles of human dignity, compassion, non-malfeasance and social justice. Discuss the elements of autonomy, fidelity and confidentiality.

The Research Paper, eight- to ten-pages (excluding title and references pages), should demonstrate understanding of the reading assignments as well as the implications of new knowledge. The purpose of the Research Paper is for you to culminate the learning achieved in the course by describing your understanding and application of knowledge in areas of legal and ethical issues in the health care profession.

Much of the work done on moral questions and moral theory in this course may seem abstract. This is necessary when seeking the broadest understanding possible. The research paper provides an opportunity to synthesize moral theory and ethical considerations as applied to a real world setting/circumstance.

For your final paper, write about a contemporary legal and/or ethical issue in the health care profession. At a minimum, you must address at least three of the course’s learning objectives:

  1. Analyze the ethical principles of human dignity, compassion, non-malfeasance and social justice.
  2. Discuss the elements of autonomy, fidelity and confidentiality.
  3. Explain the legal rights of individuals as they interact with health care services.
  4. Explain the process, including cultural diversity, for ethical decision making.
  5. Analyze the monitoring systems that ensure human rights, legal aspects, and quality health care.
  6. Discuss the implications of the Patient’s Bill of Rights.
  7. Analyze selected ethical and legal case studies that have promulgated precedent setting decisions.

Your paper should identify the legal and/or ethical issue, provide the history of the issue, present current resources to address the issue, and provide alternative or better solutions for the issue addressed. Predict the future of the issue and the basis for either optimism that the issue will be addressed or pessimism that the issue shall continue.

Following is a short list of possible topics:

  • DNR
  • Surrogacy
  • Wrongful Conception
  • Organ Donation

You must use at least eight to ten academic sources or peer reviewed journals written within the last five years (sources that are different than the web sites and textbook used in the course.) in the construction of your analyses. You can supplement your paper with interviews of agency personnel, comparisons of similar governmental agencies in varying communities or service populations, updates on current legislative initiatives in the area, and ethical analyses of the issues and services involved with the current situation(s) analyzed.
